  • Jokers = 50 points
  • Aces and 2s = 20 points
  • Kings through 8s = 10 points
  • 7s through 4s = 5 points
  • Black 3s = 5 points

  • 1,500–2,999 points = 90-point meld
  • 3,000+ points = 120-point meld

Canasta basics

  • Seven cards of the same rank make a canasta.
  • Natural canasta = 500 bonus points; mixed canasta = 300 bonus points.
  • Jokers and 2s are wildcards.
  • Black 3s block the discard pile; wildcards freeze the discard pile.
  • Red 3s score 100 points each, or 800 points for all four.
  • Going out earns 100 bonus points. A team needs at least one canasta to go out.

Game setup & winning

  • 4 players in 2 teams of 2; deal 11 cards to each player.
  • Use 2 standard 52-card decks and 4 jokers. Put remaining cards face down as the draw pile, then turn over the top card to start the discard pile.
  • The first team to reach 5,000 points wins, subject to the canasta/going-out rule.
